When must an out-of-scope biogenic CO₂ source be certified to claim eex-use credits?

Modified on Tue, 18 Aug at 4:16 PM

When CO₂ comes from a biogenic process outside the RED sustainability and GHG-saving criteria, the source must be certified as an ISCC EU Point of Origin for CO₂ under the proposed ISCC approach.

Examples include CO₂ from:

  • breweries;

  • beverage-ethanol fermentation; or

  • biomass installations below the applicable thermal-input threshold.

The main production activity does not need Processing Unit certification. The certified Point of Origin forwards the CO₂ with a Sustainability Declaration. The European Commission confirms that such out-of-scope biogenic CO₂ may still qualify for eex-use.
